Programming

Saga Javascript Coverage Library

In the past to test javascript code I've relied heavily on jasmin and jstestdriver's coverage plugin to give us metrics on how well the code is covered.

Embedding fonts in Flex 4

One thing that seems to be always required on most flex project I've been a part of is the ability to dynamically embed fonts the the project. It just comes with the territory of creating dynamic content generators where you want the user to be able to have as many fonts as they can, but don't want the overhead of loading 100+ fonts at load time.

My First Patent Application

I've been waiting for this to show up online for quite some time.

http://www.faqs.org/patents/app/20100153160

This is the text of the first patent application I was a major contributor to and even though I'm still on the fence on the usefulness of software patents, it's still kind of exciting to have your name attached to one!

AlivePDF

AlivePDF is a fantastic client side pdf generation library for ActionScript that I found a few months ago. It's opensource and a relatively new project but I've found it is an extremely powerful and fast library. Using the library is simple. Most of the configuration is done all from creating an instance of the PDF class :

  1.
  2. var _pdf:PDF = new PDF(_orientation, Unit.INCHES, _page_size);
  3. _pdf.setDisplayMode( Display.FULL_PAGE, Layout.SINGLE_PAGE );
  4. _pdf.setBottomMargin(0);

Experimenting with F*CSS

I've been spending some time using the open source F*CSS library. This is an excellant library designed for flash that lets you apply flash based properties as a css stylesheet. This may not seem like much but it paves the way for adding some very powerfull features to your flash applications.

Flex adding subelements as properties to a custom component

I was trying to extend a TextArea control, and all was working well untill I tried to use my class like the following:

  1. <widget:myhtmltextarea> <mx:htmltext> <!--[CDATA[
  2. <DIV STYLE="text-align:LEFT;"><SPAN STYLE="color:#7DB73F;font-size:20px;font-family:'Times New Roman';">Title Text</SPAN></DIV>
  3. ]]--></mx:htmltext> </widget:myhtmltextarea>

which of course resulted in the nice cryptic error message :

 Could not resolve <mx:htmltext> to a component implementation.

Finally updated the site

Well it was a long time coming but I finally converted my old wordpress blog into a full fledged drupal cms. I figured now that I've spend the last year working in drupal, it was about time I moved over.

Porting over everything was extremly simple using the drupal wordpress importer, very impressive module. I'm also very happy with the drupal geshi code formatting module, much more intuitive than the equivalent wordpress version.

I'm an open source contributer!

Drupal private messaging module updates

Check out case 634194, sure it's not much, but I'm excited anyway, for all the amount I've used open source projects in the past, it's great to finally have contributed something back to one.

Hopefully once my current project is released I can actually contribute some full fledged modules to drupal.

Interview with Bjarne Stroustrup

A good interview with Bjarne Stroustrup by James Maguire. He discusses the current state of CS graduates and the industry in general. Stroustrup is probably one of the few famous computer scientists I can relate to and I share many of his views on the state of computer science and the business world.

This advice is priceless:
